Expertise grounded in practice
I have been a member of the Moscow City Bar since 1993. My practice covers criminal defence, economic crime and the analysis of Russian proceedings in cross-border cases.
I have given expert evidence on Russian criminal law and procedure in extradition cases before courts in Cyprus, including under cross-examination, and provided Russian-law expertise in litigation before the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Questions an opinion can address
- The meaning and procedural significance of Russian investigative and judicial decisions.
- The legal framework underlying a criminal accusation and the distinction between alleged facts and established findings.
- The chronology and procedural status of the Russian criminal case.
- Arrest, detention and wanted-person decisions in the documents supplied.
- The relationship between commercial records and the alleged criminal conduct.
- Russian-law propositions advanced in another expert’s report.
I agree the questions with instructing counsel and confine my opinion to my expertise, the available materials and the agreed scope.
Written and oral evidence
I prepare written opinions, declarations and supplementary reports, review opposing expert evidence and give oral evidence, including under cross-examination.
Each opinion sets out my instructions, the documents and legal sources considered, my reasoning and any limitations. A lawyer’s submissions and an expert’s independent conclusions serve different purposes; the role must be settled before work starts.
Working with international legal teams
United States: I provide Russian-law expertise for US counsel, drawing on experience before the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Cyprus: I provide expert evidence on Russian criminal law and procedure, drawing on experience in extradition proceedings and cross-examination.
Israel: I provide Russian-law analysis and expert support for Israeli legal teams in cross-border criminal, extradition and INTERPOL matters.
United Arab Emirates: I assess enquiries from UAE legal teams against the proposed expert questions and the requirements of the relevant forum. I have not previously been appointed as an expert by a UAE court.
The instructing lawyers determine the requirements of the relevant forum, including the form of the evidence, translations and whether permission or an appointment is needed. Acceptance of expert evidence is not guaranteed.
Documents and next steps
Begin with the forum, the proposed expert questions, the deadline and the names needed for a conflict check. Do not send sensitive case files in the first message.
Once the scope is agreed, counsel can provide the relevant Russian decisions and pleadings, available translations, the procedural timetable and any competing expert reports. Missing or incomplete records are identified rather than filled with assumptions.
I work in English and Russian. Advice on US, Cypriot, Israeli or UAE law remains with qualified local counsel.
Services are subject to a conflict check and an agreed scope of engagement. References to countries describe the intended audience or specific experience; they do not indicate local offices or admission to practise local law. General information only, not advice on any individual matter.
