Russian-law support for a cross-border defence
I work on the Russian-law aspects of extradition matters, including review of criminal allegations, procedural decisions and expert evidence. I draw on my experience giving expert evidence on Russian criminal law before courts in Cyprus, including under cross-examination.
The engagement is designed around the needs of the client and the lawyers conducting proceedings in the requested country. It does not assume that one country’s procedure or one successful case can be transferred to another.
Work alongside local counsel
- Build a chronology of the investigation, accusation, wanted-person decisions and court proceedings.
- Analyse Russian arrest and detention decisions and identify issues requiring further documents or explanation.
- Compare the description of the alleged conduct with the underlying commercial and criminal records.
- Prepare Russian-law opinions and responses to opposing expert evidence where instructed.
- Coordinate domestic procedural work with counsel handling hearings and appeals abroad.
Local counsel leads advice on the law of the requested country, applicable procedures, deadlines and court representation. The Russian-law contribution is scoped separately so responsibilities remain clear.
Experience in Cyprus
I have given written and oral expert evidence on Russian criminal law and procedure in Cypriot extradition cases, including under cross-examination.
That experience informs the preparation of a documented chronology, the distinction between an allegation and a procedural finding, and the explanation of Russian legal concepts for an overseas court.
International enquiries

United Arab Emirates
Review of the Russian case and coordination with UAE-qualified counsel where the matter has a UAE connection.
How an instruction begins
First identify the country, whether the person is detained, the next deadline and the lawyers already involved. After conflicts and scope have been checked, the review may require the extradition request, Russian accusation and arrest decisions, translations and relevant court orders.
I identify missing documents, define the Russian-law work and explain how it fits into the wider defence. An imminent hearing or detention requires direct contact with local counsel.
Services are subject to a conflict check and an agreed scope of engagement. References to countries describe the intended audience or specific experience; they do not indicate local offices or admission to practise local law. General information only, not advice on any individual matter.
